Understanding the Language Column – Do Not Skip This

Many applications get rejected here every year, so read this part slowly.

  • GDS recruitment is done language-wise, not just circle-wise.
  • You must have studied the local language of that circle as a compulsory or elective subject up to at least Class 10.
  • If your circle has more than one language row, you must apply against the row that matches your studied language.
  • Example: Maharashtra has separate rows for Marathi and Konkani/Marathi. Assam has separate rows for Assamese, Bengali and Bodo. Punjab has Punjabi and English/Hindi. West Bengal has five different language groups.

Choosing the wrong language row means your application will not be considered, even if you are otherwise fully eligible.

Key Observations from This Vacancy List

  • Maharashtra Circle is the biggest recruiter with 3,553 posts across Marathi and Konkani/Marathi.
  • Uttar Pradesh (3,169) and West Bengal (2,963) follow closely.
  • Delhi Circle has the smallest share at just 38 posts, and the Punjab English/Hindi row has only 3 posts.
  • Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have unusually high ST shares — 340 out of 1,155 in Chhattisgarh and 218 out of 908 in Jharkhand.
  • Kerala has the highest UR share relative to its size, with 930 of 1,691 posts under UR.
  • The North Eastern Circle alone has six language groups, which shows how localised this recruitment really is.

Basic Eligibility for GDS Posts

Confirm every point against the official notification, but broadly:

  • Educational Qualification: Class 10 pass with Mathematics and English as compulsory or elective subjects, from a recognised board.
  • Local Language: Studied up to at least Class 10 as detailed above.
  • Age Limit: Generally 18 to 40 years, with age relaxation as per government rules for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates.
  • Additional Requirement: Basic computer knowledge, cycling knowledge and adequate means of livelihood as specified in the notification.

Selection is based on merit of Class 10 marks. There is no written exam for GDS. So your marksheet percentage decides everything.

Why This Recruitment Matters for Your Long-Term Career

Getting into India Post as a GDS is not the end point, it is the entry point. From here the departmental ladder opens up:

  • GDS to MTS through the GDS to MTS Departmental Exam
  • GDS to Postman / Mail Guard through the departmental route
  • GDS to PA / SA through Competitive Examination when LGO vacancies remain unfilled
  • MTS to PA / SA and Postman to PA / SA through LDCE

We have covered several of these results recently, including the Tamil Nadu, Telangana and MP Circle PA/SA LDCE Results 2026. In those lists, a very large number of selected officials had started their career exactly here — as a Gramin Dak Sevak.

So if you are applying now, keep this in mind: your Class 10 marks get you in, but your GDS to MTS preparation decides how fast you move up afterwards.

Application Tips That Actually Help

  • Fix your Class 10 marksheet details first. Any mismatch in name, date of birth or board can get your form rejected.
  • Convert grades to marks correctly as per the formula given in the notification. Wrong conversion is the most common cause of rejection.
  • Apply early. The portal slows down badly in the last two days.
  • Fill division preferences honestly. Selection is merit-based, but your allotment depends on preference.
  • Keep the final submitted PDF saved. You will need it during document verification.
  • Do not pay any agent. Selection is purely on Class 10 merit. Nobody can arrange a post for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. How many total GDS vacancies have been released? 28,636 posts across 23 circles and 36 language-wise groups.

Q2. Which circle has the most vacancies? Maharashtra Circle with 3,553 posts, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3,169 and West Bengal with 2,963.

Q3. Which circle has the least vacancies? Delhi Circle with 38 posts.

Q4. Is there any written exam for GDS? No. Selection is made on the merit of Class 10 marks.

Q5. How many PwD posts are there? 869 in total — 260 under PwD-A, 271 under PwD-B, 257 under PwD-C and 81 under PwD-DE.

Q6. Why does my circle appear more than once in the list? Because vacancies are notified language-wise. You must apply against the language you studied up to Class 10.

Q7. Where do I apply? Only through the official portal www.indiapostgdsonline.gov.in

Q8. Can I grow further after joining as GDS? Yes. GDS to MTS, GDS to Postman/Mail Guard and GDS to PA/SA routes are all available through departmental examinations.

Final Word

28,636 posts is a huge opportunity, and the good part is that there is no written exam standing in your way — just your Class 10 marksheet and a correctly filled form. Take your time with the language row and the marks conversion, because those two mistakes account for most rejections every single year.

And once you are in, start preparing for the departmental exams early. The people whose names appear in this year’s PA/SA result lists were sitting exactly where you are today.
