Read that DEST row again. A general category candidate needs 75 percent in the typing test. That is a high bar. This single paper ends more careers than any other in the India Post promotion exam.
How Selection Actually Works (Very Important)
Many candidates get this wrong. Here is the real rule:
- Merit is calculated ONLY from Paper-I + Paper-II combined (total 150 marks).
- Paper-III (Local Language) is qualifying only. You must pass it, but the marks do not add to your merit rank.
- Paper-IV (DEST) is qualifying only. You must pass it, but the marks do not add to your merit rank.
So your rank in the final merit list depends on your Paper-I and Paper-II score. But if you fail Paper-III or Paper-IV, your Paper-I and Paper-II score becomes useless.

The Instructions Every Selected Candidate Must Read

1. Join Within 7 Days or Lose It
- The promotion order will clearly state that if the official does not join the promotional post within seven (07) days, it will be deemed to have been refused.
- Officials on leave may still join after seven days only if they communicate their acceptance in writing.
- In that case, joining is allowed after the approved leave period ends.
- Controlling officers have been advised to contact successful candidates who are on leave to get written consent.
- Candidates who do not wish to join are encouraged to communicate that in writing too.
Do not treat this casually. Seven days is short.
2. SC / ST / PH Promotions Are Provisional
- Promotion for SC, ST and PH candidates is provisional, subject to verification of status.
- The Head of the Unit will take an undertaking from the official at the time of relieving.
- Caste or PH status must be verified within one month.
3. Errors in Name, Roll No. or Community
- Candidate names were shown against roll numbers as furnished by the Divisional / Unit Heads.
- If you notice a mistake in your Name, Roll No. or Community, get it corrected under intimation to the Circle Office.
- Warning: if any discrepancy, irregularity or omission is found in Name, Roll No., Marks, Community or Sub-category at any stage, the result of that candidate will be cancelled.
4. Disciplinary and Vigilance Cases
- If any disciplinary or vigilance case is pending against a candidate, departmental instructions must be followed before granting promotion.
- Divisional Heads must ensure the official is not undergoing any punishment and has no pending disciplinary case.
5. Provisional Candidates and Sealed Cover
- Three candidates have been provisionally recommended, with results kept in a sealed cover.
- Unit and Divisional Heads have been asked to finalise the candidature of provisional candidates immediately so they do not wait indefinitely.
- No provisional candidate should be given promotion without finalisation of candidature.
6. Eligibility Can Be Rechecked Later
If it is later found that a selected candidate was not eligible under the extant rules, or any mistake is found in the result announcement, the name will be deleted from the list of successful candidates. This condition must be written into the promotion or appointment letter itself.
