Three ASP Officers Come Back from Army Postal Service

The Department of Posts (Personnel Division) has approved the return of three Assistant Superintendents of Posts (ASP) who were serving in the Army Postal Service (APS) as Lieutenant Colonels. When they give up their Temporary Commission (TC), they will join the civil Postal Circles shown below.

This is part of the centralised cadre management of IP/ASP, which now covers how officers on field service with APS are brought back.

Quick Facts

  • Letter No.: X-06/2/2025-SPN-II (C)
  • Date: 16 October 2026
  • Issued by: Shri Vinod Kumar, Assistant Director General (SPN)
  • Sent to: Additional Director General, Army Postal Service
  • In reply to: APS Directorate letters dated 05.10.2026 and 07.10.2026

What happens next?

  • The APS Directorate will complete the relinquishment of Temporary Commission, in consultation with the Postal Circles.
  • On relinquishment, the officers will report to their allotted Circle for duty.
  • The CPMGs of Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Punjab have been asked to issue posting orders in consultation with the APS Directorate.

What Are APS and Temporary Commission?

  • The Army Postal Service (APS) runs postal services for the armed forces. Many of its officers and staff come from the Department of Posts.
  • Postal officers who join APS get a Temporary Commission (TC) with an Army rank (like Lieutenant Colonel) while they serve there.
  • When they relinquish the TC, they go back to their civil post – here, Assistant Superintendent of Posts – in a Postal Circle.

For Exam Aspirants

APS, Temporary Commission and IP/ASP cadre management are good India Post GK points. APS is headed by an Additional Director General (Army Postal Service), and the address “C/o 56 APO” is commonly seen on its letters.
