Introduction

Good news for families of deceased Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS)! The Department of Posts, GDS Section, Dak Bhawan, New Delhi, has issued an important clarification on age relaxation under the GDS Compassionate Engagement Scheme, 2023.

The letter, dated 21 October 2026, makes it clear that category-wise age relaxation for SC/ST, OBC and PwD candidates will also apply to compassionate engagement. This clears up a confusion that had been creating problems for eligible dependents.

Quick Summary

  • Issued by: GDS Section, Department of Posts, Dak Bhawan, New Delhi
  • File No.: 17-25/2026-GDS (CG)/Misc
  • Date: 21.10.2026
  • Signed by: Gurvinder Singh, Assistant Director General (GDS)
  • Addressed to: CPMG, Bihar Circle, Patna
  • Copy to: All CPMGs, and GM CEPT Mysuru for uploading on the portal
  • Key decision: SC/ST, OBC and PwD age relaxation is allowed in GDS compassionate engagement cases

What Was the Confusion?

The GDS (Compassionate Engagement) Scheme, 2023 was issued through Directorate letter dated 14.06.2023. Two parts of this scheme seemed to clash:

  • Para 8 says no relaxation in the upper age limit is allowed for compassionate engagement. The only exception is the spouse of the deceased GDS, for whom there is no upper age limit at all.
  • Para 6(a) sets out the eligibility conditions, which link back to the general GDS engagement rules.

So the question was simple: If a dependent belongs to SC/ST, OBC or PwD category, do they get the usual age relaxation or not?

Bihar Circle raised this question through its letter dated 31.08.2026, linked to a CAT case.

What Has the Directorate Clarified?

Here’s the clarification in plain words:

  • Para 8 should not be read alone. It must be read together with the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, as revised from time to time.
  • The general GDS rules already give age relaxation to eligible SC/ST, OBC and PwD candidates.
  • So the same relaxation will apply in compassionate engagement cases too, even though Para 8 says no relaxation is allowed.
  • Spouses still have no upper age limit, as before.

The clarification has been issued with the approval of the competent authority.

Before vs After: Simple Comparison

Spouse of deceased GDSNo upper age limitNo upper age limit (no change)
General category dependentNo age relaxationNo age relaxation (no change)

OBC dependentRelaxation unclear / deniedCategory-wise relaxation allowed

Who Benefits?

  • Sons, daughters and other eligible dependents of deceased GDS who belong to SC/ST, OBC or PwD categories.
  • Families whose applications were rejected only because the dependent crossed the general upper age limit. They may want to check with their divisional office whether their case can be reviewed.
  • Divisional offices across all circles, since the copy has gone to all CPMGs and will be uploaded on the portal. This brings one uniform rule everywhere.

What Should Applicants Do?

  • Keep a valid caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC) or disability certificate (PwD) ready.
  • Read the GDS Compassionate Engagement Scheme, 2023 and this clarification together.
  • Contact your Divisional Office if your earlier application was held up due to age.
  • Keep a copy of this clarification letter (File No. 17-25/2026-GDS (CG)/Misc dated 21.10.2026) with your application.

Why This Matters for GDS and Exam Aspirants

Many GDS employees later move up through the GDS to MTS Departmental Exam and the GDS to Postman Departmental Exam. Knowing GDS rules is useful for them in more than one way:

  • GDS rules questions come up in departmental exams, especially on the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020.
  • Recent India Post Circulars are a good source for general awareness and rules-based questions.
  • Every GDS family should know what support is available if something unfortunate happens.

Smart Preparation Tips

  • Read the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020 carefully. Note key paras on eligibility, age and engagement.
  • Keep a notebook of important India Post Notifications and clarifications with their dates.
  • Practise with GDS to MTS Mock Tests and GDS to MTS Previous Year Question Papers.
  • Follow the official GDS to MTS Syllabus and GDS to Postman Syllabus while revising.
  • Structured GDS to MTS Online Classes can help you cover rules and circulars in a planned way.
