Selection Process — No Exam, Only 10th Marks
This is the part every candidate must understand properly.
How the merit list is made
- Applicants are shortlisted on the basis of a system-generated merit list.
- Merit is prepared on marks obtained in the Secondary School Examination (10th standard) of recognised boards, aggregated to percentage up to 4 decimal places.
- There is no written exam and no interview.
If your marksheet has marks
If your 10th marksheet shows marks in each subject, the system will use the marks obtained.
⚠️ Critical warning: If your marksheet has marks but you apply using grades/points instead of marks, your application is liable for cancellation. Fill exactly what is printed on your marksheet.
If only some subjects show grades, you may enter grades for those subjects. You do not need to convert them yourself.
If your marksheet has grades
Grades are converted by the system using a multiplying factor of 9.5:
| Grade | Grade Point | Multiplication Factor |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 10 | 9.5 |
| A2 | 9 | 9.5 |
| B1 | 8 | 9.5 |
| B2 | 7 | 9.5 |
| C1 | 6 | 9.5 |
| C2 | 5 | 9.5 |
| D | 4 | 9.5 |
- Where CGPA is given, marks = CGPA × 9.5.
- Where both subject-wise grades and CGPA are given, the higher of the two results will be taken.
- You are not required to convert grades into marks yourself. Just enter the grades/points as printed. The system does the conversion before results are declared.
Special cases
- Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE): awards both percentage and grade points. Merit will be generated on the percentage. You must fill the percentage for each subject. If you apply with Grade Points instead of Percentage, your application is liable for disqualification.
- State Board of School Examinations (SBSE), Tamil Nadu, 2020-21: due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no marks or grade points were awarded and only a pass certificate was issued. The system will award a uniform 66.67% in such cases. Candidates must select “Pass” against each subject while applying online.
Tie-breaking order
If two candidates have the same merit, the tie is broken in this priority order:
DOB (older in age) → ST trans-woman → ST female → SC trans-woman → SC female → OBC trans-woman → OBC female → EWS trans-woman → EWS female → UR trans-woman → UR female → ST trans-male → ST Male → SC trans-male → SC Male → OBC trans-male → OBC male → EWS trans-male → EWS male → UR trans-male → UR male
The Department has reserved the right to introduce any additional tie-breaking criteria, and its decision is final.
Application Fee
- Fee: Rs. 100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) for all posts notified in the chosen Division.
- Exempted: all female applicants, SC/ST applicants, PwBD applicants and Transwomen applicants.
- Payment modes: Credit/Debit cards, Net Banking, UPI. Bank charges as applicable.
- Fee once paid will NOT be refunded. Confirm your eligibility for the Division before paying.
- Once you start payment, complete it within 10 minutes. Do not close or refresh the window.
- If you paid the fee and later became fee-exempt during resubmission, the fee already paid will not be refunded.

Division Selection and Post Preference
- You can apply for one or more vacant GDS posts, but only in ONE selected Division.
- After selecting the Division, all eligible posts (based on community, age, PwD status and local language) will be displayed.
- You will NOT be considered for a post you have not given preference for. Give preference for every post you are willing to take.
- If shortlisted, only one post will be offered, and your rights to all other posts are forfeited.
Example from the notification: If you opt for five posts in preference order — post1, post2, post3, post4, post5 — and you are meritorious in more than one, the first post in your preference order for which you are most suitable will be offered. Candidature for the rest is forfeited.
Note on Post ID: If an office has more than one post with the same post name, each is uniquely identified by its Post ID. If you want those posts, you must give preference for all the relevant Post IDs.
Correction Window — How It Works
A two-day edit/correction window runs from 23.09.2026 to 24.09.2026.
Key rules:
- You do not need to register again to correct a mistake.
- You can correct names, marks, choice filling and other data — except mobile number and email ID, which cannot be modified under any circumstances.
- If your correction changes your category in a way that requires fee, the modification is accepted only after you pay the fee.
- Once modified, the previous application becomes null and void and merit is decided on the modified application.
- If you start a modification but do not reach the final stage and submit (including payment), the modification is null and void and merit is decided on your previously submitted application.
- Once you resubmit during the edit window, no further corrections are allowed.
- After the window closes, no change will be allowed by post, fax, email or by hand.
After Shortlisting — Verification and Joining
Communication of selection
- The shortlist is released on the GDS Online Engagement Portal.
- Shortlisted candidates are informed through SMS and email on their registered mobile number and email ID.
- If you don’t receive the SMS/email due to technical or other reasons, the Department is not responsible. Visit the portal regularly.
Physical verification of documents
- Report to the Divisional Head / Unit Head of the Division where the post is notified, within 15 days of shortlisting.
- Candidates who fail to report within 15 days are marked ‘Non-turned up’ by the system, further verification is blocked, and candidature is automatically cancelled.
Documents to carry (originals + two sets of self-attested photocopies):
- Marks sheet
- Identity proof
- Caste certificate
- PwBD certificate
- EWS certificate
- Transgender certificate
- Date of Birth proof
- Medical certificate from a medical officer of a Government Hospital / Dispensary / Primary Health Centre (compulsory)
- Language/dialect certificate (for Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa or Nagaland)
Joining formalities
- If documents match and no discrepancy is found, a system-generated ‘Offer of Provisional Engagement’ is issued immediately.
- You must complete pre-engagement formalities and join within 30 days of the offer. This includes 3 days of prescribed basic training and arrangement of accommodation.
- Failure to complete formalities or not joining within 30 days cancels the candidature, and the post goes to the next candidate.
- A provisional engagement order is issued pending educational, caste, disability and police antecedent verification.
- On receipt of all verification reports, the final order of engagement is issued.
When candidature gets cancelled
The Department will issue supplementary lists against candidates who:
- Fail to turn up for document verification within the stipulated time
- Whose document verification is unsuccessful
- Fail to complete joining formalities within the stipulated period
- Do not submit the caste certificate in the prescribed format within the extended period
- Are unwilling to join, resign after joining, or fail to join within 30 days
- Disguised their identity in any manner to take unfair advantage
The engagement process will be closed and no further shortlist will be issued after 31.12.2026. The Department may modify or extend dates at its discretion.
Digilocker — Do This Before You Apply
After selection, the Department may verify your 10th marksheet through API Setu / Digilocker / the Board’s official website.
Action points:
- Make sure you have a Digilocker account
- Ensure your marksheet, caste certificate and PwBD certificate are fetched into it
- Check and correct any discrepancy in your online marksheet BEFORE applying — if the online marks differ from what you filled, your candidature will be rejected
You will also have to submit a consent declaration (Annexure-X) authorising the Department to access your marksheet through API Setu.
Service Conditions — Understand Before You Apply
Be clear about what a GDS engagement is and is not.
- GDS are not regular employees of the Department or the Central Government. Their emoluments, allowances and entitlements are not at par with Central Government employees.
- Service conditions are governed by the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, and are not framed under Article 309 of the Constitution of India.
- GDS are holders of Civil Posts outside the civil services of the State.
- They serve mostly in rural areas.
- Under Rule 3A, they work a minimum of 4 hours and maximum of 5 hours a day, and cannot be retained beyond 65 years of age.
- A GDS should have another source of income besides the government allowances for adequate livelihood.
Other bars:
- Candidates dismissed / removed / compulsorily retired from Government service or GDS as a penalty are barred from applying (undertaking required — Annexure-IV). Concealment leads to termination and prosecution.
- No person holding an elective office will be considered.
- A selected GDS shall not engage in any activity with any outside agency detrimental to the business or interest of the Post Office / IPPB.
- Past experience or service of any kind will not be considered for selection.
Reservation and PwBD Details
General reservation points
- Candidates seeking SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/EWS benefits must hold a valid certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure-V), to be produced at physical verification. Failure to produce the original = candidature cancelled.
- If the caste certificate is not in the prescribed format, the candidate may be provisionally selected and must submit the correct certificate within 15 days of the provisional engagement offer.
- EWS: no upper age relaxation, but 10% reservation in engagement for those not covered under SC/ST/OBC reservation. A valid Income Certificate as per DoPT OM No. 36039/1/2019-Estt (Res) dated 31.01.2019 is required.
- OBC: the candidate should not fall in the creamy layer as on the closing date of application, irrespective of the date of issue of the certificate.
- EWS certificate of the relevant financial year is accepted if valid as on the last date of application, irrespective of issue date.
PwBD categories and reservation
| Post | Disability Sub-Category | Reservation |
|---|---|---|
| BPM / ABPM / Dak Sevak | A) Low Vision (LV) | 1% |
| B) Deaf (D), Hard of Hearing (HH) | 1% | |
| C) One Arm (OA), One Leg (OL), Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victim, Both Leg (BL)*, Spinal Infirmity/Spinal Deformity without associated neurological/limb dysfunction | 1% | |

Note 2: Persons with Spinal Deformity and Spinal Injury (SD/SI) with associated neurological/limb dysfunction are covered under the respective sub-category (OA, OL for all GDS categories, and BL for Dak Sevak only).
Temporary disability certificates: As per letter No. SC-12/20/2025-RC-DOP dated 22.12.2025 —
- Conditions “likely to improve” are NOT eligible for reservation.
- Conditions that are progressive, non-progressive or not likely to improve ARE eligible.
Multiple disabilities:
- Under different categories (e.g. LV under (a) + OA under (c)): apply under category (DE) only.
- Under the same category (e.g. OA + Acid Attack Victim, both under (c)): apply in the same category selecting only one benchmark disability — category (C), not category (E).
Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
Learn from the notification itself. These are the exact grounds for rejection:
- ❌ Multiple or duplicate registrations — strictly prohibited. Candidature cancelled and action under GDS Rules 2020. Duplicate registration by altering basic details removes all such candidates from the process.
- ❌ Applying with grades/points when your marksheet shows marks
- ❌ Applying with Grade Points instead of Percentage for DBSE
- ❌ Blurred or illegible photograph or signature
- ❌ Incomplete data in the application
- ❌ Uploading wrong or unnecessary documents
- ❌ Name, DOB, father’s name, mother’s name not matching the SSC (Class X) marksheet exactly
- ❌ Not giving preference for a post you actually want
- ❌ Fee payment pending after 1700 hours on the closing date
Beware of Fraud Calls
The notification carries a clear warning:
The Department does NOT make any phone calls to applicants or shortlisted candidates.
All correspondence happens through the respective Engaging Authority only. Do not share your personal information, registration number, mobile number or email ID with anyone. Be alert against unscrupulous phone calls promising selection.
For genuine queries, division-wise help desk numbers are provided on the website. The Department will not entertain queries on any other number.
What Happens After You Become a GDS
This is where most candidates stop reading — and it is the most important part for your career.
Getting engaged as a GDS is the first rung of the India Post ladder, not the last. Once you have served the required period, you become eligible for departmental promotional examinations:
| From | To | Exam |
|---|---|---|
| GDS | MTS | GDS to MTS Departmental Exam |
| GDS | Postman / Mail Guard | GDS to Postman Departmental Exam |
| MTS | PA / SA | MTS to PA Departmental Exam |
| Postman | PA / SA | Postman to PA Departmental Exam |
| PA / SA | Inspector Posts | Inspector Posts LDCE |
Unlike GDS engagement, these promotions do involve a written exam. That means syllabus, previous year question papers, mock tests and proper preparation.
Many GDS employees regret not starting preparation early. The smart approach is simple: join as GDS, settle into the work, and start preparing for the GDS to MTS exam and GDS to Postman exam from your first year itself. The eligibility period passes faster than you think.

Final Advice
Four things, in order of importance:
- Do not create more than one registration. Duplicate registration removes every such candidate from the process. There is no appeal.
- Fill your marks exactly as printed on your 10th marksheet. Not converted, not rounded, not from memory. Keep the marksheet in front of you.
- Apply early. The portal will be slow in the last three days. The 1700 hours cut-off is strict.
- Start thinking about your next step. GDS is the entry door. The GDS to MTS and GDS to Postman exams are where the real career growth happens — and those need preparation, not just a marksheet.
Good luck. Fill the form carefully, and check the preview twice before you hit submit.
