India Post has changed the exam pattern and syllabus for the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) for the post of Inspector Posts.
The order came from the Department of Posts, Personnel Division, Dak Bhawan, New Delhi on 22nd August 2025 (Letter No. 7-14/2011-SPN-II). A corrigendum was later issued on 24th September 2025 with a few small corrections.
If you are a GDS, MTS, Postman, Mail Guard or Postal Assistant planning your long-term promotion path, this post is for you. Read it fully. Everything is explained in simple points.
Why This News Matters to You
Most people think the Inspector Posts exam is only for senior staff. That is not true. It is the top of the same ladder you are already climbing.
The normal growth path inside India Post looks like this:
- GDS to MTS (departmental promotion exam)
- GDS to Postman / Mail Guard
- MTS to PA / SA (Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant)
- Postman to PA / SA
- PA/SA to Inspector Posts (LDCE)
So the person who clears the GDS to MTS Departmental Exam today can sit for the Inspector Posts LDCE tomorrow. Starting early always helps. The habit of reading rules, manuals and circulars is the same habit that wins at every stage.
The Old Syllabus Is Gone
The Directorate has clearly said this new pattern supersedes the old one that was circulated on 6th April 2021.
- The new pattern applies from the date of issue of the letter.
- It applies to all examinations held after that date.
- So if you are still studying from a 2021 syllabus PDF, please stop and update your notes.
Inspector Posts LDCE — New Exam Pattern
The exam now has three papers.

- Noting in about 200 words on a given topic — 15 marks
- Drafting in about 200 words on a given topic — 15 marks

This is the paper most candidates ignore. Do not ignore it. Handwriting practice and format practice matter here.
Qualifying Marks
- General category: 40% in each paper, with an overall average of 45%
- SC / ST / PwBD: 33% in each paper, with an overall average of 38%
Two important points:
- You must clear each paper separately. Scoring high in one paper will not save a failed paper.
- The exam is conducted without the aid of books. No manuals allowed inside the hall.
Cut-Off Date for Circulars
This is a very useful rule that many aspirants miss:
- All circulars, orders and guidelines issued up to 31st December of the year before the exam year are part of the syllabus.
- Only exception: Annual Report and Book of Information. For these, the latest version available on the DoP website will be taken.
So for an exam held in 2026, everything issued up to 31.12.2025 is included.

How to Prepare — Simple Plan
Step 1: Fix your source books. Do not read random PDFs. Read the actual manuals and rules named in the syllabus.
Step 2: Give Paper-II daily practice. Ten minutes of noting and drafting every day is enough. Write one Major Penalty Charge Sheet every week.
Step 3: Make a circular file. Keep every SB order, Directorate order and DoP&T instruction in one folder, sorted by date. Remember the 31st December cut-off rule.
Step 4: Solve previous year question papers. Old papers show you which volumes are asked again and again. The same is true at every level — India Post Previous Year Question Papers are the fastest way to understand the pattern for GDS to MTS, MTS to PA and Postman to PA exams too.
Step 5: Take mock tests with a timer. 150 questions in 3 hours means about 72 seconds per question. Speed is a skill. Build it with regular India Post Mock Tests.
Step 6: Do not leave general ability for the last month. English, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude carry good weight in Paper-III. These are scoring areas if you start early.
