What Is the DEST? A Quick Recap

The DEST is a 15-minute computer typing test. For the Postman / Mail Guard exam:

  • Type 600 key depressions (±5%) in English
  • Maximum marks: 25
  • Qualifying marks: 15 for General, OBC and EWS (60%). 12.5 for SC, ST and PwD (50%)
  • Case sensitive. Capital and small letters must match exactly
  • Backspace does not work. Use the arrow keys or mouse with the Delete key
  • No negative marking for wrong words

600 keys in 15 minutes is only 40 keys a minute. That is slow and comfortable, so focus on accuracy, not speed.

8-Day Preparation Plan Before 1 November

  • Day 1–2: Practise typing short English paragraphs daily for 15 minutes.
  • Day 3–4: Stop using Backspace. Correct mistakes using only the arrow keys and Delete.
  • Day 5–6: Pay close attention to capital letters, full stops and spellings.
  • Day 7: Take 2–3 full 15-minute mock tests with a timer.
  • Day 8: Rest, check your centre and time, and keep your ID ready.

What to Carry on the DEST Day

  • Admit card or intimation letter (as instructed by your division)
  • A valid photo ID
  • A pen for signing the evaluated answer sheet
  • Reach the centre early

Remember, you cannot leave the hall without signing the evaluated answer sheet.
