Paper IIWith Books2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility)

  • You must be a Postal Assistant (PA) or Sorting Assistant (SA).
  • You need at least 3 years of continuous service in the PA/SA cadre on the last date of application.
  • Your service record should be consistently good.
  • LSG officials cannot appear in this exam.

Important vacancy rules:

  • Applications are called only in divisions where an Accountant vacancy exists.
  • If a division has nil vacancy, its officials cannot appear, even if they are otherwise eligible.
  • If a division has nil vacancy and no qualified official at all, the exam may be held for one token vacancy.
  • The number of candidates allowed is 10 times the vacancies, minus officials who already passed but haven’t been posted as accountants.
  • Candidates are selected by seniority, and the Head of the Circle has the final say.

Number of Chances

  • Normally, you get 3 chances.
  • You get a 4th chance if you score at least 35% aggregate in your 3rd attempt.
  • If you get permission but don’t appear, it is counted as appeared and failed (unless the reason is sickness with a medical certificate or something beyond your control).

Exam Pattern

  • Two papers, both with books.
  • Each paper is of 100 marks and 3 hours.
  • Each paper has:
    • Theory: 30 marks (about 1/3)
    • Practical: 70 marks (about 2/3)
  • Some questions in both parts are compulsory.

Qualifying Marks

CategoryEach PaperAggregate
General (UR)45%50%
SC/ST38%43%
PwBD (new)38%43%

Good news for PwBD candidates: From 28.04.2026, the Directorate reduced their qualifying marks to match SC/ST candidates. Earlier it was 45% and 50%.

Exemption Rule (Very Useful!)

  • If you score 60% or more in any paper, you are exempted from that paper in the next two exams.
  • Exemptions earned in older exams (with the old syllabus) are still valid as per the exam pattern.

What Happens After You Pass?

This part is important, so read it carefully. As per the Directorate guidelines dated 11.02.2025:

  • The exam is only qualifying in nature.
  • Passing it does not change your seniority in the PA/SA cadre.
  • Accounts posts are no longer a separate cadre. They are part of the general line.
  • Qualified PA/SA officials may be posted on Accounts posts at the PA/SA level.
  • If you later get promoted to LSG or HSG in the general line, you may be posted on Accounts posts at that level too.
  • No separate promotion will be made to LSG/HSG (Accountant) posts anymore.
  • Travelling allowance for the exam is given only to successful candidates.

How to Apply

  • Fill the application form (Annexure-A) in BLOCK letters.
  • Paste a recent passport-size photo attested by your Unit Head.
  • Fill in details like:
    • Date of joining PA/SA cadre and length of service
    • Whether this is your first attempt
    • Previous chances with roll number and year
    • Any exemption (60% marks) with year, roll number and paper
    • Choice of language: English or Hindi
  • Sign the declaration.
  • Submit it to your Division Head before 09.11.2026.

Your Division Head will verify your details and mark you as eligible/recommended.

Simple Preparation Tips

  • It’s an open-book exam, but don’t depend fully on books. You won’t have time to search everything. Know where each rule is.
  • Mark your books with tabs and highlighters for quick reference.
  • Focus on practicals. They carry 70% of the marks. Practice pension, leave, pay, and allowance calculations.
  • Solve previous year question papers to understand the type of questions.
  • Take timed mock tests to manage the 3-hour limit for each paper.
  • Read FHB and Postal Manual Vol VI carefully, as they cover a big part of Paper II.
