Reading the Numbers – What Actually Matters
Guwahati is the whole story
- 17 of 36 Postman posts in the LDCE route are in Guwahati Division — 47% of the route.
- 12 of 27 Postman posts in the CE route are in Guwahati — 44% of the route.
- Across both routes, Guwahati Division alone holds 29 of the 66 posts.
If Guwahati is not near the top of your preference list, you are competing for a much smaller pool.
Four of the 12 Guwahati CE posts are already spoken for
The footnote matters. 2 Sports Quota + 2 Compassionate Appointment posts are reserved from Guwahati Division. So the effective open competition in Guwahati under the CE route is closer to 8 posts, not 12. Plan with the real number.
Cachar and Nalbari-Barpeta have zero in both routes
Neither MTS officials nor GDS in these two divisions have a home-division post this year. You can still appear, but expect allotment elsewhere and fill your preference form accordingly.
Category-wise reality check
LDCE route (MTS officials):
- UR 24, SC 9, ST 3. SC candidates have a reasonable share here — 9 posts spread across Guwahati, Darrang, Goalpara, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tinsukia.
- ST candidates: only 3 posts in the entire circle (Guwahati, Darrang, Nagaon — one each).
CE route (GDS):
- UR 14, OBC 5, EWS 3, SC 3, ST 2.
- OBC posts sit in Guwahati (3), Goalpara (1) and Tinsukia (1).
- EWS posts are in Darrang (2) and Dibrugarh (1). Darrang is unusually good for EWS candidates this year.
- ST candidates: 2 posts only (Guwahati and Nagaon).
Look at your own category column before you look at the total. That is the number you are actually competing for.
Mail Guard is tiny — but do not write “No”
Only 3 Mail Guard posts exist across both routes, all in RMS GH. Still, when the option form arrives, remember how these forms work in other circles: if you do not write “Yes” for Mail Guard, your name will not enter the Mail Guard merit list at all, no matter how high you score. Three posts are still three posts.

What You Should Do Now
- Find your division in the correct table. MTS officials read Part A; GDS read Part B. Do not mix them up.
- Check your category column, not just the division total.
- Save this vacancy memo. When the option/preference form stage comes, this is the table you will use.
- Watch for the exam notification from the Circle Office with dates, syllabus and the option form proforma.
- If your division shows 0, accept it early and prepare a wide preference list rather than hoping for a late change.

Q. Why is there no OBC or EWS column in the LDCE table? Because LDCE is a promotional examination and there is no reservation in promotion for OBC and EWS. Those candidates are considered against the UR criteria.
Q. Are these figures final? The memo says the vacancies are submitted, duly certified by the Divisions and approved for the vacancy year 2026. As always, variation due to administrative reasons can be notified later, usually at the time of results.
Q. What are the sports and compassionate posts? Four Postman vacancies from Guwahati Division under the CE route are reserved — 2 for Sports Quota and 2 for Compassionate Appointment. They are not open to general competition.
Q. Should I opt for Mail Guard with only 3 posts available? That is your decision, but understand the mechanics: in these option forms, not opting means not being considered at all. Opting costs you nothing.
Q. Does this apply to other circles? No, this is Assam Circle only. How to Prepare From Here
Sixty-six posts across an entire circle means the margin will be thin. Recent results from other circles showed general-category cut-offs running around 90% of the merit paper marks.
- Cover the Postman and Mail Guard syllabus now, before the notification arrives.
- Solve previous year question papers for your own route — MTS to Postman or GDS to Postman, not generic material.
- Focus hardest on the papers that count for merit. In the PM/MG exam pattern followed by other circles, merit comes from Paper-I + Paper-II, while Paper-III and DEST are qualifying only.
- Do daily DEST typing practice. A weak typing test cancels an otherwise excellent score.
- Take timed full-length mock tests every week.
- Revise India Post circulars, postal rules, GK and current affairs regularly.
And the lesson that keeps repeating across circles this season: candidates who scored well above the cut-off still got no posting because their preference list was too short. When that form reaches you, fill every single slot.
