DEST Exam Pattern — Read This Carefully
This is the most important part of the whole circular.

What 600 key impressions in 15 minutes actually means: that is roughly 40 key impressions per minute. This is not a speed challenge. It is an accuracy challenge.
The ± 5% means you have a small margin. You are not expected to be perfect.
But the qualifying marks are high. 75% for General, OBC and EWS is a serious bar. Do not treat this test lightly.

Point 7 of the circular says the venue particulars will be intimated in due course, separately.

Exemption for Visually Handicapped Candidates
As per Directorate guidelines issued vide letter no. 17-08/2018-SPN-I(Pt.) dated 11 October 2022:
- In Annexure-I, the VH candidate at Sl. No. 49 is exempted from appearing in DEST
- In Annexure-II, the VH candidates at Sl. No. 49 and Sl. No. 99 are exempted from appearing in DEST
If you are a VH candidate and your name is in the list but you have not been marked exempt, contact your Division immediately.
Check Your Details Today
Point 4 of the circular puts the responsibility clearly on the Division and Region.
Regions have been asked to cross-check the correctness of eligibility of every candidate, including category — UR / OBC / EWS / SC / ST / PwBD.
The circular says in bold: any discrepancy noticed must immediately be brought to the notice of the Circle Office.
Check these three things right now:
- Is your hall permit number correct?
- Is your name spelled as in your service record?
- Is your category correct?
A wrong category can change your qualifying percentage from 60% to 75%. That is not a small mistake.
How Candidates Were Shortlisted
Point 3 explains the rule, as per Directorate instructions vide letter no. 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 19 December 2022.
To be shortlisted, a candidate had to:
- Secure minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I and Paper-II combined (total of both papers), and
- Secure minimum qualifying marks in Paper-III separately
Both conditions had to be met. Only then does the candidate reach DEST.
Two Days to Prepare — Do This
You do not have nine days. You have about two.

Today and tomorrow — accuracy only
- Sit with a computer keyboard, not a phone
- Type simple English paragraphs for 15 minutes at a stretch
- Do not look at the keyboard
- Target a steady rhythm, not speed bursts
Practice all keys, not just letters
- Numbers row
- Capital letters using Shift
- Full stops, commas, brackets, hyphens
- Backspace habit — learn to correct without panic
On exam day
- Reach the venue early, batches are fixed
- Carry hall permit, ID proof and office identity card
- Adjust your chair and keyboard before the timer starts
- If you make a mistake, keep typing, do not freeze
- Remember it is only 15 minutes — you can hold focus that long
One honest tip: most people fail DEST because of nerves, not because of typing ability. Breathe. Type at a comfortable pace. Accuracy is what the system counts.

Candidates who qualify in DEST move to the final selection stage for the post of Postman / Mail Guard.
For a GDS, this means a permanent departmental post. For an MTS, this is a promotion with a better pay level.
