Nine Days to Go: How to Prepare for DEST
The skill test decides whether your written exam effort turns into an actual promotion. Here is a practical plan for the days left.
Days 1–3: Build the base
- Practise on a desktop or laptop keyboard, never on a phone.
- Do three sessions daily, each matching the actual test duration.
- Type slowly and correctly first. Speed comes after accuracy settles.
Days 4–6: Add difficulty
- Use passages that contain numbers, capital letters, punctuation and symbols.
- Practise without looking at the keyboard. Every glance down costs you seconds.
- Note your error patterns — most people repeat the same three or four mistakes.
Days 7–9: Simulate the test
- Do full mocks at the same time of day as your slot.
- Practise sitting straight in a chair at a table, not on a bed.
- Stop heavy practice the night before. Rest matters more than one extra hour.
One honest reminder: a candidate typing 30 words per minute with 98% accuracy usually clears. A candidate typing 45 words per minute while constantly hitting backspace often does not. Accuracy beats speed in DEST.
Practical Tips for Test Day at PTC Guwahati
- Reach the Postal Training Centre well before the reporting time. Guwahati traffic is unpredictable.
- Carry your admit card / call letter, office ID and one photo ID.
- Candidates travelling from Cachar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar should plan travel a day in advance.
- Test the keyboard given to you during the practice window, if one is provided.
- Read the passage once before starting. Ten seconds of reading saves more than it costs.
