The Most Important Thing to Understand First

Read that again if you are a GDS in Assam. 31 of the 57 posts this year do not require you to clear any exam. They go by seniority and fitness through the DPC, following the relevant Recruitment Rules.
So your first job is not studying — it is checking your own seniority position and fitness eligibility with your Divisional Office, immediately.

What the numbers are telling you
- RMS GH and RMS S together hold 21 of 57 posts — more than a third of the circle. Keep them high in any preference list.
- Nagaon, CO Guwahati and PAF Guwahati have zero vacancies in both routes.
- SC candidates: only 1 post in the entire circle (RMS S, DPC route), and zero in the exam route. Be realistic and plan accordingly.
- EWS candidates: 7 posts across both routes, mostly in Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and RMS. Relatively good odds.
- ST candidates: 5 posts, concentrated in Tinsukia, Cachar, RMS GH and RMS S.
Two Deadlines Every Divisional Office Must Meet
The memo gives clear, dated instructions to all Divisions and Units:
- Conduct the DPC by 18.09.2026 for promotion to MTS from GDS on seniority-cum-fitness basis, as per the relevant Recruitment Rules.
- Submit the net MTS vacancies to be filled through competitive exam mode to the Circle Office by 22.09.2026, in the prescribed proforma.
The proforma asks for Vertical Vacancy (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, Total) and Horizontal Vacancy (VH, HH, OH, Others) for each Division/Unit.
Why “Net Vacancies” Is the Line That Really Matters
This is the part most candidates will miss on a first read.
The exam-route figure of 26 is not final. Divisions must first hold the DPC, then report the net vacancies for the exam. That means:
- If some DPC posts cannot be filled — no eligible GDS in that category, seniority not met, fitness not cleared — those posts can flow into the exam pool.
- So the final competitive exam vacancy could end up higher than 26.
- Watch for the Circle Office’s follow-up notification after 22.09.2026. That one will carry the real exam numbers.
Do not plan around 26. Plan around “26 or more, confirmed after 22nd September.”
What You Should Do This Week
If you are a senior GDS:
- Go to your Divisional Office and ask where you stand in the GDS seniority list.
- Confirm your fitness eligibility under the Recruitment Rules — service period, record, and any pending disciplinary matter.
- Make sure your service book and personal records are updated and correct. A missing entry can cost you a DPC promotion you had already earned.
- The DPC is on or before 18.09.2026. There is very little time.
If you are a junior GDS:
- The exam route is your path. Start now.
- Check whether your division even has an exam vacancy — Goalpara and Nagaon show zero in the CE route.
- Begin the GDS to MTS syllabus immediately rather than waiting for the exam notification.
