India Post Redraws Its Map: New Regions, Divisions and Sub-Divisions
The Department of Posts has approved a major reorganisation of its administrative units in 16 Postal Circles. By our count, it creates 8 new Postal Regions, 34 new Postal Divisions and close to 30 new Sub-Divisions. Several existing Divisions and Sub-Divisions are being merged. All changes take effect from 1 November 2026.
The Establishment Division at Dak Bhawan issued a separate Office Memorandum for each circle on 12 October 2026. They are signed by Shri Dushyant Mudgal, DDG (Establishment). The aim is better administration, stronger business development and higher revenue.

- Group B and C staff: the Head of Circle will redeploy them, in consultation with CIFA and the Region or Division. Only live posts can be moved, not “deemed to be abolished” posts.

- Group A officers: separate orders will come from the Postal Directorate.
- Until posts are moved: new units will run through local arrangement or additional charge.
- No new budget: expenses will be met from existing funds. New inspection vehicles need separate approval.
- One-year review: each circle must improve revenue and the Expense Coverage Ratio (ECR). Performance will be reviewed after one year.
